If I had to pick my favourite North American sports car, the Viper would be it, although I have to admit that’s based purely on its looks (yes, I am that shallow). It does have a lot of power under the hood, though, and SRT Motorsports hope to show that off in Europe. They’ve received an invitation to participate in this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race, running June 22-23, and will be sending two factory-supported SRT Viper GTS-Rs along.
The Vipers will be competing in the LM GTE Pro class of this year’s Le Mans. It’s not the first time the Viper has taken part (they finished one-two in their class in 1998, 1999, and 2000), but they haven’t been there for a while. According to SRT’s President and CEO Ralph Gilles, “Historically the Viper GTS-R has enjoyed great success at Le Mans, so we couldn't be more excited and proud to accept the challenge to return to France and continue composing the next chapter in the history of Viper racing at such an historic venue.”
SRT Motorsports Vipers will also be participating in the 2013 American Le Mans Series. All very well for Viper fans, but I suspect most Mopar diehards would prefer to see Chrysler return to NASCAR.
