Spotted: Nissan Figaro

1991 Nissan Figaro
On a trip to the UK last February, my husband and I spotted what looked like a classic convertible parked near the British Museum. Naturally we went over for a closer look to see what it was. On discovering it was a Nissan, I was rather confused, as back in the time it looked like it was built (late 50s, early 60s), they were still known as Datsuns. So as soon as we got to our restaurant, we googled it.

Thanks to Wikipedia, my confusion was resolved. Turns out it was a more modern car (built in 1991) with a deliberately retro look. It does come with modern conveniences, however, including AC and a CD player. Only 20,000 were built, which makes it a rather rare car, especially outside of Japan. In fact, according to both Wikipedia and UK dealership site figs4u (check it out for more info or if you’re looking to buy), the original would be purchasers had to win a lottery to buy one.

The Figaro was built for the Japanese market, but several ended up in the UK. They originally came in four colours, pale aqua, lapis grey, emerald (pale green), and topaz mist. figs4u will also sell you one repainted in Barbie pink. You might want to check out the video posted below first (part of a Fifth Gear episode), telling you what to look for when buying one.

Mercury Meteor: Only in Canada, Eh?

1950 Meteor Custom Sedan
by Kate Tompkins
Here’s another Canadian car from my old archives—the Mercury Meteor. I’ve seen a few of these at car shows. The two-tone models with the side spears are especially striking.

While Canada’s Ford dealers were looking for a higher-priced Ford to add to their line-up, Mercury dealers were looking for a lower-priced Merc. In response to that demand, Ford Motor Company of Canada first produced the Mercury 114 (named for its wheelbase, which was smaller than the American Mercury 118) and then the Meteor line from 1949 to 1961 and 1965 to 1976. No models were produced for model years ’62--64, when the name was being used for the American Mercury Meteor.
1956 Meteor Rideau
by Kate Tompkins

The Meteor started out as a Ford body with Mercury trim, but later models (mid-60s on) were based on a Mercury body with a Ford interior. Only available with a V8 the first few years, Ford made a V6 available in the 1956 model year. The Meteor was initially available in the Custom version as a two or four door sedan, or club coupe. The Deluxe version offered the same body styles, with the addition of a business coupe. By 1950, a convertible and station wagon had been added to the line-up.

Like the Ford Monarch, the Meteor was available with a two-tone paint job. Also like the Monarch, it was a good seller. During the 50s, it was generally fourth in sales, following Chevrolet, Pontiac and Ford. A quarter of a million Meteors had been built by 1957.
1966 Meteor Montcalm
by Kate Tompkins

The Meteor series included the Rideau, the Rideau 500 (a higher-end version), the Montcalm, the Niagara, and the top of the line Montego (later the LeMoyne). From 1966 through 1970, there was a sport-themed version of the Montcalm produced, the S-33. From 1968 on, the Meteor became the Mercury Meteor and picked up Mercury badging.

If you see a car with a stylized shooting star on the rear, you’ve spotted a Meteor.

Ford Monarch: Only in Canada, Eh?

With Canada Day being on Monday, it seemed like a good time to rerun this old column from 2010.
1956 Monarch Lucerne Phaeton
by Kate Tompkins

While most times the big three auto manufacturers produced the same cars on both sides of the 49th parallel, sometimes a model was only available in Canada. Such was the case with the Monarch (not to be confused with the Mercury Monarch built in the 1970s).

Canada’s Ford dealers wanted a mid-priced car for their showrooms and Ford Canada delivered with the Monarch. First built in 1946, the Monarch was based on a Mercury chassis, but had Ford trim and taillights. It didn’t look that different from the other Fords and Mercurys on the road, but apparently it filled a market niche. Canadians bought lots of Monarchs.
1956 Monarch Lucerne Phaeton
by Kate Tompkins

Ford responded by giving the car its own trim in 1949, including a lion hood ornament and a unique grille. But what really made the car different from American Fords of the time was the fact that it was available with a two-tone paint scheme from 1949 to 1951. It actually outsold Mercury in Canada in 1953 and 1954.

In 1958 the Monarch disappeared to be replaced by the Edsel. Needless to say, the Monarch reappeared the following year. The 1958 Monarch is sometimes known as the Monarch II.

1957 Monarch Lucerne
by Kate Tompkins
The Monarch came in various versions over the years. There was the Monarch Monterey, the Custom, the Lucerne, the Custom Lucerne, the Richelieu, the Turnpike Cruiser and the Sceptre. The Sceptre was the top of the line model for 1959, and at 223 inches with a 128 inch wheelbase, was the biggest Monarch ever built. Ford Canada continued to build the Monarch until 1961, by which time other Ford models had filled the niche.

Or maybe not. How do you replace a car that, to quote their 1951 brochure, lets you “ride like a king?”
